I Know What It's Like to Struggle. That's Why I'm Running.
I know what it's like to struggle.
Somebody asked me this week what makes me different from my opponent. Here's the honest answer:
I'm a normal person. I've never had just one job. I've worked two, three, sometimes four at a time my whole adult life, because that's what it takes to keep the lights on.
This week, in the middle of a campaign for Congress, I had to choose between paying my electric bill and paying my car note.
I've also lived the other version of this. When an illness made it hard for me to get to work, I asked my employer for the accommodations I was entitled to. They wouldn't give them to me. I had to choose my health or my job. I chose my health.
I lost half my income in a single day. It took me years to dig out.
Here's what I believe:
You shouldn't have to go into debt or bankruptcy because you got sick.
You shouldn't have to fight for what you're owed alone because you can't afford a lawyer.
You shouldn't have to be a politician to be treated like a person.
